Network printing provides important advantages for the efficient use of printer hardware. But wouldn’t it be nice if it could do more?
Some of the possibilities become obvious if you view the network printer not as the final device in a push process that starts with the print button in your application, and instead examine the possibilities of the printer as a pull device, that retrieves print jobs that you, or others, send for printing. |
Not only do you ensure that you are the only person to handle your own documents, but you can also pick them up at your convenience. Not only can you use your network as a secure distribution system, but you can also distribute documents to people independent of their access to computers.
SafeCom provides pull printing for any HP LaserJet printer connected to your network, providing you with personal printing of documents you print, or that are sent to you by others. |
How SafeCom works
SafeCom intercepts the print job before it leaves the user’s computer. The print job is routed to the SafeCom software on a Windows NT server, where it waits for the user to pull it from a SafeCom equipped printer. The P-Mail option allows the recipient of the document to be different from the originator – in effect providing controlled, remote printing to individuals or distribution lists.
Secure Document Distribution makes it possible for organisations and companies to distribute highly confidential documents, such as cheques sent from head office to subsidiaries, over the network. Of course, both Secure Document Distribution and P-Mail provide retrieval tracking. |
Whether a document is put on the server by the user, or sent to them by a colleague, it can be controlled and released for printing once the user is identified at any HP LaserJet printer equipped with SafeCom – using a personal card and/or a PIN code.
A touchscreen interface on the card reader provides information and control of the print jobs on the server. |
